oh Canada

I've been in Canada for the past 10 days or so, picking blueberries. Not too strenuous, as I've been, well, picking blueberries since I was old enough to know the difference between blue, red, and spider. I brought Pearl with me, intending to ride between where I'm staying and where I'm picking, but I've only done that once so far. Because there's a heat wave, and it's nasty out there. This week may be my week, as it's cooling down to the mid-80s most days. I'll see how it goes.

After picking berries, I've been going to the movies. And I have this to say about the movies: going alone, in the middle of the afternoon, in grubby clothes that are a mix of pj style pants and biking tops? It's fun! Truly, it is fun, I'm enjoying it a lot. Especially since the same bored teenagers take my money every day. Since they're Canadian, they're not surly or rude, but since I'm Canadian, I can still tell that they're bored. Also, it seems like every time I pass a teenager walking in Windsor, they're in full goth gear. Don't they know there's a heat wave on? Don't they have skateboards? Don't they have friends with cars?

Returning to the movies, my assessments are these: John Cusack is still cute as pie, and I will still pay to see him in the theater, but I really am over that intensely needy neurotic thing. I mean, his bumbling characters warm the cockles of my heart, but I shudder to think of actually interacting with any of them. Ok, I mean, I wouldn't turn down coffee and a biscotti, but dating would be completely out. The other actor who does intensely needy neurotic really well is Joe Fiennes, and the same goes for him. Coffee and a biscotti, buddy. The other thing about this week is that I really enjoyed Sky High. I love being the only non-parent adult in the theater, laughing at all the grown-up jokes. But Sky High is a cross between The Incredibles and Harry Potter. A funny and cute cross, preceded by both the Narnia and Goblet of Fire previews, with the bonus of having Lynda Carter stomp out of a room (in heels) after excaiming "I mean, I'm not Wonder Woman!" and a boppy soundtrack full of remade 80s favorites. This is definitely a film for people our age who had kids right out of college and would now be the target parent audience.

Um yeah, so that's what I've been doing. After teaching in July, a little outside labor is welcome, and I'm sure after another 10 days, a little inside teaching will be welcome upon my return.

This slightly sun-addled post brought to you by the Windsor Public Library.
